Breaking out of addiction can be nearly impossible when drug or alcohol use has become built into the fabric of your daily life. For most people living with addiction, it’s nearly impossible to ‘just quit’. It’s only within a structured, supportive framework that those who are suffering can begin to imagine new and healthier lives for themselves.
The Retreat aims to provide this fresh start. For 30 days, program guests are hosted in their own private room at The Retreat’s residential facilities in Auckland, New Zealand. The Retreat works with the principles of the twelve steps to guide guests into a new and happier chapter of their lives. Most importantly, The Retreat removes guests from their addiction-centric environment and routine so that they can reflect and consider the future from a neutral perspective. In addition to qualified professionals, The Retreat is staffed by volunteers who are themselves in recovery from addiction. By interacting with these volunteers, guests are given positive role models and examples of what, in a real-world context, recovery and sobriety can look like. The communal, group focus of the program reinforces the idea that recovery is a “we” program, and must not involve isolating oneself from others.
Families are often just as affected by addiction as the addict. For this reason, The Retreat offers support to the families of guests, as well. Family Night, The Retreat’s weekly support group, is available for families to attend even after the conclusion of their loved one’s time in the programme. The Retreat also offers one-on-one meetings with their CEO for the families and loved ones to help find a solution to problems and concerns going on in their lives.
